The Ukraine stunned Germany with a 9-6 extra inning win on the third day of the competition at the European Junior Championship in Gijon, Spain. Three runs in the top of the tenth decided the outcome. Germany had tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth. A. Borsch homered and drove in two for the Ukrainian team. L. Stoecklin had two triples and three RBI for Germany.
Netherlands – France 7-1
I. Delmarre allowed just one hit in seven innings to lead the Netherlands to a 7-1 win over France. At the plate shortstop Van der Meer went 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI. A. Roy took the loss for the French team.
Italy – Russia 3-1
Italy edged out Russia 3-1. The Squadra Azzurri broke a 1-1 tie with runs in the seventh and eighth to decide the game. A. Grimaudo collected three hits. D. Semenov stifled Italy by allowing just one run on five hits and three walks in six innings, while striking out seven. I
Spain – Czech Republic 8-6
Host Spain remains in contention after an 8-6 win over the Czech Republic. After the Czech team took a 3-0 lead midway through the third, Spain scored two in the third, four in the fifth and two in the seventh to get en route to the win. The squad of Andy Berglund made things interesting in the ninth by scoring three runs, but Spain held on to the victory. J. Leon, R. Varela and M. Baeza combined to score six of the eight runs.
