Italy – Ukraine 11-1 (8)
A. Russo and A. Grimaudo combined for seven RBI in an 11-1 Italian victory over the Ukraine on the first day of the European Junior Championship in Gijon, Spain. D. Anselmi, L. Servidei and N. Marangoni didn’t show good control on the mound, but only allowed two hits in eight innings to seal the win.
Netherlands – Czech Republic 10-0 (8)
The Dutch Junior National Team scored six runs combined in the seventh and eighth to blow a 10-0 shutout over the Czech Republic wide open. R. Schel (W) and J. Angela issued just three hits and two walks in eight scoreless innings. Four players of the Netherlands collected three hits apiece.
Belgium – Germany 7-17 (8)
Another eight-inning victory, this time for Germany, which crushed Belgium 17-7. They scored in seven of the eight frames for an easy win. B. Aurnhammer paced the offense by going 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, batting eighth. Vandenabeele had four hits for Belgium.
Lithuania – Spain 5-8
In the evening game Spain scored five runs in the top of the seventh in an 8-5 win over Lithuania. Spain drew a whopping 17 walks in the game. Diego Piva (W) allowed three hits, an unearned run and a walk in six innings. Dovydas Neverauskas had three hits, two runs and two RBI playing center field. He also pitched in relief.
