Box score

The Therwil Flyers have won the European Cup Qualifier in Ostrava, Czech Republic. In the final on Saturday the Swiss champion defeated host Arrows Ostrava 10-7. Therwil scored six runs in the last three frames to claim the title. With the ECQ win they have secured a Swiss spot in next year’s CEB Cup.

Originally scheduled for a 2pm start rain pushed the start of the final to 6pm. Both teams didn’t show any rust and scored eight runs in the first three innings for a 4-4 tie. Arrows took the lead in the fifth with a RBI single by Tomas Junec. However Therwil had an answer. Jack Shannon tied the contest with a RBI triple in the seventh and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Sven Leeman. In the ninth this duo connected for back-to-back home runs to plate four insurance runs.

They were much needed, as Ostrava initiated a rally in the bottom half of the ninth. A single by Jakub Malik in combination with an error at short, helped Alex Lee and Michael Vykoukal to score, making it a three-run game. They loaded the bases with no outs, when Junec walked. However closer Josh Tamba, which had taken over for Shannon in the seventh, recovered and struck out Martin Drong, Ales Navratil and Boris Bokaj in order to end the game.
