The suspended game from Wednesday plus two regular games were played on day four at the European Championship C-Pool in Miejska Gorka, Poland on Thursday. In the morning Poland prevailed in extra innings over Romania in the continuation of Wednesday’s affair. Poland also picked a second win on the day against Georgia to improve to 3-0. Meanwhile Romania rebounded from the morning loss with a victory over Estonia. The preliminary round ends on Friday. Live streams are available for all games.
Poland – Romania 6-5 (10)
Following an injury to Eduard Pirvu on a slide in the eighth inning the contest between Poland and Romania had to be suspended due to darkness following the lengthy injury delay. When play resumed Poland broke a 5-5 tie in the tenth to pick up the 6-5 win. Artur Wojtczak led the way with three RBI. Pawel Sztejka pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the win. Romania’s reliever Sergiu Susanu made a throwing error on a bunt in the bottom of the tenth, allowing the decisive run to cross the plate to end the game in walk-off style.
Romania – Estonia 10-9
Game two of the day was a slugfest, won 10-9 by Romania over Estonia. Klaus Nicolici won the match with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. Estonia had erased a 0-5 deficit with an eight-run rally in the fourth. Romania then took a 9-8 lead with two runs each in the fifth and the sixth. But Estonia tied the game in seventh. Matti Emery hit a grand slam, but also served up Nicolici’s double in the ninth, when he took the mound. Nicolici had four hits and four RBI total in the game. Mihai Burlea struck out 12 in nine innings to receive the win. He conceded five hits, nine runs (4 ER) and five base on balls. Ergo Rohi got charged with the loss.
Georgia – Poland 7-12
Another high-scoring game was played in the early evening on Thursday. Poland defeated Georgia 12-7. The tournament hosts overcame an early 0-5 deficit by scoring in each of the last six innings. Georgia didn’t score between the third and the ninth and dropped to 1-3 to conclude the European Championship C-Pool. Jakub Wojtczak, Mariusz Grzanowski and Artur Wojtczak each hit home runs for Poland. Przemyslaw Paluch had four hits. Otar Aivazashvili and Tornike Nikolashvili combined for five RBI for Georgia. Pawel Sztejka struck out nine batters in 6 2/3 strong innings of relief to pick up the win. Giorgi Jalabadze took the loss.
