The European Championship Cadets U21 in Trebic, Czech Republic ended on Sunday with the Czech Republic defeating Austria 9-3 in the final. Austria had the better start into the championship game and took a quick 2-0 lead, but the Czech scored three runs in the third and continued to put runs on the board to cruise to the victory.
David Vohanka went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. He, Adma Hajtmar and Michael Vikoukal scored two runs apiece. Amin Many crossed the plate twice for Austria. Daniel Vitek struck out six in 6 2/3 innings of strong relief for the win, allowing four hits, an unearned run and three walks. Michael Koller issued five runs (4 ER) on six hits in three-plus innings to take the loss.
The Czech Republic finished the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record. During the preliminary round they had out-scored the opposition 70-7 in five dominant games. Austria concluded the first round with lopsided wins over Lithuania and Slovakia to improve to 3-2 and winning the tie-breaker over Russia and Ukraine to make it into the Gold Medal Game.
During the closing ceremony Tomas Junec (Czech Republic) got named best batter, Denis Leonov (Russia) best pitcher. Adam Hajtmar (Czech Republic) received the trophy for the Most Valuable Player.
