The 2017 European Champions Cup in Regensburg got underway on Wednesday with four games. After some rain in the morning the weather improved throughout the day. L&D Amsterdam, Curacao Neptunus Rotterdam, Rouen Huskies and ASD Rimini celebrated wins on opening day.
L&D Amsterdam – T&A San Marino 5-1
L&D Amsterdam scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 5-1 win over T&A San Marino in the first game of the ECC 2017. Mario Chiarini had tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth after the Pirates had taken the lead in the first. Kevin Heijstek was perfect through four innings and allowed just four hits, a run and two walks in eight to pick up the win. He struck out seven. Remco Draijer scored twice for Amsterdam. Carlos Quevedo got charged with the loss.
Curacao Neptunus – Unipol Bologna 12-6
Curacao Neptunus scored all 12 runs between the fourth and the eighth to turn a 0-2 deficit into a 12-6 win over Unipol Bologna. Gianison Boekhoudt went deep and drove in five runs. Cristian Diaz collected three RBI. Stijn van der Meer went 4-for-5 with four runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Elton Koeiman pitched five solid innings for the win. Rudy Owens took the loss, conceding three runs on five hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Rouen Huskies – Mainz Athletics 17-7
The Rouen Huskies rallied from 0-3 and 3-5 deficits to mercy rule the Mainz Athletics 17-7 in eight innings. Rouen scored 11 runs in the last two frames to blow the score wide open. Six players from the Huskies had multiple hits. Gabriel Fromental had four including a home run. He scored three times and drove in three. Dylan Gleeson tripled and scored four runs. Jean Granado struck out eight in 7 1/3 innings. Tim Stahlmann took the loss.
Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – ASD Rimini 2-5
The Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg put up a fight, but still lost 2-5 against ASD Rimini in the evening game at the Armin-Wolf-Arena. Through the first seven innings Mike Bolsenbroek and Jose Rosario were locked into a pitcher’s duel. Nicola Garbella broke the scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the eighth. Rimini added three more runs in the top of the ninth for a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the last frame, the Buchbinder Legionaere rallied for two runs, but it was too little too late.
