Euro Interleague Baseball: Week 3

Posted on April 22, 2022May 18, 2022 by Gabriel Fidler

Summary
Budapest won handily for the third-straight week in Euro Interleague Baseball, blasting its rivals in the Hungarian capital in a single matchup. Vojvodina hosted fellow Serbian foes Beograd ’96 for a doubleheader in the former’s interleague season opener. In the opener, a pair of recent Venezuelan signings teamed up for an impressive 7-2 victory, while Game 2 saw Vojvodina’s Japanese free agent addition, Jumpei Yamazaki, direct the club to a second big win.

Highlights
It was all Venezuela at Serbia’s only baseball field, Ada Ciganlija, on Saturday. Facing a Beograd club that surrendered 38 runs in Budapest a week prior, Vojvodina looked to get off to a hot start itself. Belgrade’s Tomić had other ideas, holding the hosts at bay before a Ciro Morillo home run turned the tide. Meanwhile, Andersón Vera was turning in an incredible performance, as only four batters even connected with the ball over his eight innings. In the end, Vojvodina claimed the 7-2 victory, thanks in large part to Vera’s 18 strikeouts and only two hits permitted. Tomić struck out nine batters of his own, taking the loss after throwing seven innings and working around four free passes. On Easter morning, Yamazaki continued the trend of unhittable offerings in the Serbian derby, punching out nine in seven frames, giving up three hits and no walks as Vojvodina waltzed to a 13-1 decision.

A day earlier, Zsolt Győri and Carlos Rubio once more led the Red Wolves to a one-sided victory. Győri’s big hit was a three-run roundtripper, but the U18 stud drove in two additional runs as well. Rubio went yard for the fourth time in three games, tying for the European home run lead among top-tier circuits. Péter Gornik earned the win after punching out nine in five frames, while Ákos Földessy struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the win.
