The MLB regular season kicked off in April with reigning champions the Los Angeles Dodgers seeking to win back to back titles. Their campaign began just as the last had finished with a brilliant start resulting in a strong 13-2 record. However, this form was short lived with the Dodgers suffering a horrible recent record of five successive defeats.
The consecutive losses mark some of the Dodgers’ worst form since 2017 and 2018 where they also endured similar periods of turmoil. Their wider form guide makes for grim reading with 15 losses in their last 20 fixtures leaving their current record at 18-17. However, the talent within the team suggests that this is just a blip and there are still a lot of fixtures left to salvage the season.
Early season favorites and rivals to the Dodgers come in the form of the New York Mets and Chicago White Sox. The White Sox suffered a sticky patch of form early on in the campaign but have put together a series of impressive results and currently sit first in the American Central League. The Met’s also sit first in their respective league after securing a 4-2 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks with McNeil and Lindor teaming up to produce all four runs after the pair had a bust up in the home team’s dugout recently.
Outside of the title favorites there have been notable performances from the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners. The Giants are currently in first place in the National League West whilst many had tipped them to struggle during the pre-season predictions. Standout performers include Kevin Gausman and Johnny Cueto who have both massively contributed to their second-best average game score of 58.3. The Mariners are also performing to a high level having reduced the pressure on star duo Kyle Lewis and Kyle Seager who accounted for 45% of their run production last season. They have built a well-rounded squad with exciting up and coming players in the form of Ty France. Currently they sit second in the American League West standings with a record mirroring that of the LA Dodgers who they face off with on Thursday morning.
Now that the season is well underway it will be interesting to see if the Dodgers can bounce back? Will the Mets and the White Sox keep up the early season momentum and who will emerge as the dark horses? Follow the action on ESPN Player with May’s upcoming fixtures below and much more live action scheduled right up until the end of the regular season in October.
