Borgerhout Squirrels – Diving Ducks 8-5
The Borgerhout Squirrels have won the European Cup Qualifier in Antwerp. The host defeated the Diving Ducks from Vienna-Neustadt 8-5 in the final on Saturday afternoon. The Belgium representative now has the opportunity to compete for an A-Pool spot in a European Cup Playoff in September.
Against the Austrian Vice Champion, Borgerhout needed three runs in the bottom of the fifth to turn a 4-5 deficit around. Once again Jordan Weymouth led the way, going 4-for-5 with a pair of extra base hits, a run and a RBI. Austin Weymouth scored twice. On the mound Yannick Gontier issued six hits, five runs (2 ER) and two walks in 6 2/3 innings for the win. Cedric Desmedt closed it out.
Wayne Ough led the Diving Ducks with two RBI. Matthias Scheicher and Jake Turcato scored twice. Ryan Kroko gave up 13 hits, eight runs (5 ER) and a walk in six frames to take the loss. Ough kept the gap to three runs in the last two innings, but the offense weren’t able to come back.
