Belgium got its first win at the 2012 European Championship in the Netherlands. They defeated Great Britain 10-7 thanks to four runs in the bottom of the eighth. The game was a back-and-forth affair, as the lead changed four times throughout the course of the contest. Steven Delannoy and Benjamin Dille decided the outcome with a two-run double and a two-run triple. The British team had led 7-6 after a two-run homerun by Sam Wiley in the top of the seventh.
Delannoy finished the game with two doubles and five RBI. Wiley drove in three for GB. Aaron Hornostaj had two RBI. Former Minor Leaguer Thomas De Wolf pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. David Rees was charged with the loss. Starters Kenny Vandenbranden and Spencer Kreisberg had allowed five runs each in six respective three innings of work on the mound.
Both teams are now 1-3 with one game day left on the schedule for the first round.
Although I am a Brit I am reallyu glad to see the Belgians competitive again as they were 20 years ago. Its good for baseball in Europe. Great to see how baseball is developing in Europe we must keep it going.
