In the first game of pool B at the European Cup in Matino, Italy, CORENDON KINHEIM started with an 8-1 victory over TEMPLIERS SENART. The EC winner of 2007 and 2008, took a fast 3-0 lead after three innings, before blowing the game wide open in the last three periods.
Jeffrey Verbij opened the scoring with a two-run homerun over the left field fence. Denny Rombley went two-for-five with a triple, three runs scored and a RBI. Dirk van’t Klooster drove in two, while Bryan Engelhardt scored twice. New KINHEIM shortstop Josh Renick batted leadoff and had a single in six at bats.
SENART, which only has 13 players on the official roster, was led by Andrew Smith and Ernesto Martinez, who had two hits apiece. Andre De Sousa drove in their lone run with a sac fly in the fourth.
Duko Jansen (W 1-0) allowed just one unearned run on two hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings, throwing 85 pitches. He struck out five. Nick Veltkamp replaced him and punched out five in 2 2/3 innings of two-hit relief. Onno Bauer closed it out in the ninth.
The TEMPLIERS gave the starting nod to Samuel Meurant (L 0-1), who induced six hits, three runs and four bb in six innings. He got seven K’s. It was a solid outing by their staff ace, but not good enough. Steven Vesque played mop-up duty in the last three frames.
