The European Championships Cadets in Brno, Czech Republic started with the first four games of the preliminary round on Tuesday. The tournament lasts until Saturday. The Netherlands is the defending champion.
Italy – Germany 20-19
Italy and Germany battled for three hours and 35 minutes with Italy winning by a final score of 20-19. And yes, it was still Baseball. The two teams combined not only for 39 runs, but also 28 hits and a whopping 38 walks in just seven innings. Fitting for the whole game, Italy won thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the final frame, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Germany’s Valentin Roemer took the loss, after issuing the last two decisive walks on eight pitches.
Russia – Slovakia 8-2
Dmitry Semenov struck out 14 in five scoreless inning to lead Russia to an 8-2 win. He allowed just two hits and a walk, throwing 86 pitches. Leonov hit a homerun and drove in three. Marek Kapusta, who took the loss on the mound, went three-for-three at the plate.
Netherlands – Ukraine 17-1 (5)
The Dutch team dominated the Ukraine with a 17-1 pounding in five innings. Two seven-run innings blew up the score. Daal went three-for-four with a homerun and five RBI to lead the offense.
Czech Republic – Austria 5-6
Austria upset host Czech Republic with a 6-5 win, overcoming a 0-5 deficit in the process. They scored five runs in the seventh to complete the comeback win. Michael Schneider made the victory possible with an impressive relief appearance. He replaced starter Marcel Ceska in the third and gave up just one hit and a walk until the end. He struck out five.
