Italy answered a Croatian lead with nine-run rally in the fourth and celebrated its fourth win in the tournament by a score of 13-1 in seven innings. Giuseppe Mazzanti and Laidel Chapelli hit homeruns and combined for six RBI. Tony Granato drove in four. Croatia had scored the first run of the game on a RBI single by Branko Nenadic in the top of the fourth.
Roberto Corradini (ITA) went four innings, allowing three hits, an unearned run and no walks, while striking out six. Yovany D’Amico (W 1-0) got the win after striking out the side in the fifth. Justin Cicatello and Marco Grifantini also pitched in the game for Italy. Matko Dabo (L 0-1) was charged with six hits, five runs and three bb in 3 1/3 innings. Relievers Marin Farkas and Hrvoje Toljanic conceded eight more runs before Denis Kresnik threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to close it out.
Italy’s third baseman Juan Infante had to be taken to a hospital after he collided with Croatia’s first baseman Ernesto Pereira.
Croatia has to play two games on Wednesday, as they are facing Greece in the make-up game in the morning and the Ukraine in the first classification game in the evening.
