The Netherlands closed out the first round at the European Championship in Hoofddorp with an 8-3 win over Sweden on Tuesday evening. They improved to 5-0 and won Group A. Sweden dropped to 2-3 and will play for seventh place on Wednesday. The Scandinavians actually led 2-0 and 3-1 against the Dutch team in the last preliminary game, but a four-run rally in the fourth decided the outcome in favor of the heavy favorite.
RBI singles by Joel Johnson and Adam Sorgi gave the Sweden a 2-0 lead in the first. After the Dutch got on the board through a RBI groundout by Rogear Bernadina in the third, Sweden regained the two-run advantage in the bottom half of the same frame with a RBI double by Matt Merrifield. Nicholas Filice scored twice for Sweden.
However the lead was short-lived, as the Netherlands answered with fierce in the fourth. It was not power like three home runs against the Czech Republic, but by taking advantage of mistakes of the Swedish defense. Three runs scored on a pair of wild pitches and a throwing error. Chadwick Tromp added a RBI single to make it 5-3 for the Dutch. On the mound Jim Ploeger earned the win, as he allowed five hits, three runs (1 ER) and a walk in six innings. Kevin Kelly, Berry van Driel and Tom de Blok closed it out with one-hit ball. Albin Sivard issued one hit, four runs and three base on balls, while getting just one out in the fourth to take the loss.
