Netherlands 000 000 001 1 3 1 Seoul Nexen Heroes 000 000 011 2 5 1
After losing 1-6 on Tuesday to start into the St. Petersburg International Baseball, the Netherlands once again couldn’t celebrate a win over the Korean Seoul Nexen Heroes on Thursday. The professional team defeated the Dutch squad of manager Brian Farley 2-1 thanks to a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth. Moments earlier the lone European participant in the international tournament had tied the contest through a solo homerun by Raily Legito.
Otherwise the Thursday night affair at Al Lang Field was a pitcher’s duel. Former Major Leaguer Brandon Knight held the Netherlands to one hit in the first three innings, striking out five. Overall they managed just three hits, but also draw seven walks. Danny Rombley had two hits. Rob Cordemans, Kevin Miner, Leon Boyd, Nick Veltkamp, Nick Stuifbergen, Berry van Driel and Jurjen van Zijl took the mound for the Dutch National Team.
On Saturday evening the St. Petersburg International Baseball will continue for the Netherlands, as they will square off with the Canadian Junior National Team. Afterwards dates with the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies, as well as the St. Petersburg College will follow.
