The Netherlands lost on Sunday 1-7 against Canada and missed an opportunity to better their position in the standings of group B in the World Cup of Baseball. Both teams now have a 3-2 record with two games left in the preliminary round.
After five scoreless innings to start the duel, the Canadian team scored first. Mike SAUNDERS led off the sixth with a solo-shot and the pouring began. They added six more runs over the next three frames to decide the contest. SAUNDERS (1-3, 2 bb( reached base three times and scored twice. Emerson FROSTAD and Jamie ROMAK each had a two-run-single in the seventh. Nick WEGLARZ was responsible for the last run with a RBI-single in the eighth.
The Netherlands scored their only run in the bottom ov the seventh frame on a solo-homerun by Bryan ENGELHARDT (2-4). Roel KOOLEN, Dirk VAN’T KLOOSTER, Sidney DE JONG and Sharnol ADRIANA got the other four hits for the European champion.
Brooks MC NIVEN (W 1-0) pitched six scoreless innings for the maple leafs. He allowed just four hits, striking out two.
Rob CORDEMANS (L 0-1) matched MC NIVEN for five innings, but lost his gameplan in the sixth. He was charged with two hits, two runs and five walks in five-plus innings. He struck out seven. Dave DRAIJER and Duko JANSEN gave up a combined five more runs on six hits and three base on balls after CORDEMANS. Michiel VAN KAMPEN recovered from his blown save against Australia with a scoreless ninth.
