After a hard-fought five-game series AVG Draci Brno has won its 16th straight Czech championship, defeating Technika Brno 9-2 in the decisive fifth match on Sunday afternoon. After splitting the first two games one week ago, AVG Draci took a 2-1 lead in the series on Saturday with a 7-2 victory. Radim Chroust hit two homeruns and Wayne Ough one to seal the win. They scored five runs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Pat Ahearne won the duel on the mound against Ryan Murphy.
Technika evened the series 2-2 on Sunday early afternoon thanks to a 2-1 nail-biter. They scored both runs in the second, while AVG Draci countered with one in the third. Otherwise starters Trevor Caughey and Petr Minarik dominated on the mound. Caughey sealed the win, when he struck out Jan Jablonka with runners on second and third in the ninth.
But even though they had the reigning champion on the ropes, Technika couldn’t complete the upset in the Czech Finals. Game five was played later on Sunday afternoon back at the AVG Arena and the Dragons celebrated their 16th straight title when all the dust had settled. They took an early 4-0 lead through three innings against Technika’s starter Daniel Mraz en route to a rather easy 9-2 victory. Martin Schneider pitched seven strong innings for the win.
