Czech Extraliga: Week 6

Czech Republic, News - Czech Baseball Leagues Comments Off on Czech Extraliga: Week 6

Week 6 saw Draci Brno book its second loss of the season, with Nuclears Trebic taking Game 1 in the weekend series, in the process ensuring the Nuclears’ qualification for the Top6. Draci will enter the second stage of the season as the clear favorites, though Week 7 has Draci taking on its closest challenger, second-placed Tempo Prague. Tempo stumbled in Week 6 play, with just one win against a resurgent Hrosi Brno.

Since being swept by the Nuclears in Week 4, Arrows Ostrava have won five of six, with the Week 6 sweep of Technika setting the stage for a dramatic Week 7 clash with Sokol Hluboka. The two clubs, who both have seven victories, are battling for qualification to the Top6. Hrosi and Eagles Prague are almost certain to book their tickets to the next stage in Week 7, leaving Arrows and Hluboka to duke it out for the sixth and final spot.

Results (box scores linked)
Trebic Nuclears v. Draci Brno (8-7, 3-8, 4-10)
Technika Brno v. Arrows Ostrava (0-2, 3-9, 2-3)
Hrosi Brno v. Tempo Prague (8-3, 7-4, 2-4)
Sokol Hluboka v. Eagles Prague (4-5, 4-11, 4-3)

Nuclears Trebic’s Jaylyn Williams, last week’s Extraliga Batter of the Week, collected five hits against Draci Brno (5-for-14) and now leads all batters with 32 hits, 10 of them for extra bases.  Williams now has a 12-game hitting streak and has hit safely in every game but one this season.

Arrows Ostrava’s pitching staff limited Technika Brno to just five runs in the weekend series, with the hurlers striking out 39 Technika batters and walking just nine. Alec Lemmon followed last week’s 12-strikeout performance with 15 punch-outs in Arrows’ Game 3 victory.

Hrosi Brno twice rallied in the top of the ninth inning to make the weekend a success against Tempo Prague. In Game 1, Hrosi broke a 3-3 deadlock with five runs in the top half of the final frame to ensure an 8-3 victory, and Game 2 saw the club rally to score six runs in its last turn at bat to turn around a 3-1 deficit.

Late rallies and 3-1 leads also defined the Eagles Prague-Sokol Hluboka series. Trailing 3-1 in Game 1, Eagles brought home three runs in the eighth and added another in the ninth to take the W. Hluboka returned the favor on Sunday, with the victory essential to keeping the club’s chances of reaching the Top6 alive. Trailing 3-1, Hluboka tied the score in the bottom of the eighth inning and eventually forced extra innings, with the hosts able to celebrate after scoring the winning run in the tenth.

Draci Brno 16 2
Tempo Prague 10 5
Trebic Nuclears 10 8
Eagles Prague 9 8
Hrosi Brno 8 10
Arrows Ostrava 7 9
Sokol Hluboka 7 11
Technika Brno 2 16
