Czech Extraliga: Week 1

Czech Republic, News - Czech Baseball Leagues Comments Off on Czech Extraliga: Week 1

Wintry weather led to postponements and uncomfortable playing conditions on the opening weekend of the Czech Extraliga. Draci Brno and Eagles Prague opened the season under the floodlights Friday night with temperatures hovering at just above freezing, and snow flurries filled the air across Czech diamonds throughout the weekend.

Draci started the 2022 campaign with a sweep of Eagles, scoring 37 runs in its three victories, with cross-city rival Hrosi keeping pace with two victories of its own. Hrosi’s third game against Trebic was a casualty of the wintry weather. Last year’s surprise package, Sokol Hluboka, got off to a strong start of its own, winning two of three against Brno’s third Extraliga club, the promoted Technika. Meanwhile, Tempo Prague and Arrows Ostrava managed to get just one game in, which the Prague hosts won in a walk-off.

Results (box scores linked)
Draci Brno v. Eagles Prague (9-6, 13-3, 15-12)
Hrosi Brno v. Trebic Nuclears (ppd, 9-1, 5-3)
Sokol Hluboka v. Technika Brno (11-3, 7-13, 5-1)
Tempo Prague v. Arrows Ostrava (ppd, ppd, 7-6)

Former Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets farmhand Martin Cervenka went a combined 3-for-13 in his return to the Extraliga with Eagles Prague. He hit a three-run homer to open the scoring in Eagles’ Game 2 loss to Draci Brno.

Petr Cech is wearing a new uniform in 2022, having left Arrows Ostrava for Hrosi Brno, but the performance remains the same. The veteran went a combined 2-for-7, with his first homer of the season, and four RBI in Hrosi’s two victories against Trebic. Cech drove in 70 runs last season for the champion Arrows, slashing .369/.456/.561 while striking out just seven times in 157 at-bats.

Sokol Hluboka qualified for the Top4 last season, in its first year back in the Extraliga after a 16-year absence, on the back of strong pitching, and the opening weekend of the 2022 season offered more of the same. Imports Billy Parsons (6IP, 3H, 24, 6K) and Jimmy Boyce (6IP, 2H, 1R, 9K) each collected their first victories of the season against this season’s new boys, Technika Brno.

Technika’s Svatoslov Kraut struck out 13 Hluboka batters in a losing cause in Game 3.

Tempo Prague’s Marek Minarik hit two solo home runs and scored the walk-off run after being hit by a pitch and being brought home by a Michal Zelenka double, his second of the game. All told, Minarik scored four of Tempo’s seven runs, with the 18-year-old Zelenka recording three RBI.

Draci Brno 3 0
Hrosi Brno 2 0
Tempo Prague 1 0
Sokol Hluboka 2 1
Technika Brno 1 2
Arrows Ostrava 0 1
Trebic Nuclears 0 2
Eagles Prague 0 3
