No luck for the planned Cuba vs Netherlands matchup at Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana, Cuba. As the originally scheduled date on Monday evening also the make-up date on Tuesday afternoon were rained out. The exhibition was part of a trip of a delegation headed by Dutch trade minister Lilianne Ploumen to increase economic relations between Cuba and the Netherlands. Instead of the game only photos were taken.
The game would have been the first of the Netherlands in Cuba since the 2003 Baseball World Cup. Manager Hensley Meulens had invited former Major Leaguers Andruw Jones and Shairon Martis on the trip, as well as other players like Michael Duursma and Kalian Sams. Cuba’s squad would have been led by brothers Yulieski and Lourdes Gourriel. The game was scheduled for five innings. Additionally a home run derby and youth baseball clinics were planned.
