Cuba claims Caribbean Series Crown 2015

Posted on February 10, 2015February 10, 2015 by philipp

A team from Cuba has won the Caribbean Series for the first time since 1960. On Sunday they defeated Cuba 3-2 in the championship game. Yulieski Gourriel’s solo home run in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference in the game.

Mexico tried to rally in the bottom half of the frame, but only managed to cut the deficit to 2-3 on a RBI single by Eric Farris. With runners on second and third, Joey Meneses flied out to center to end the threat. Yosvani Torres allowed just two hits and a run in six innings to pick up the win. Anthony Vasquez got charged with the loss.

Even though Cuba was 1-3 after the first round, they managed to win the title at the prestige tournament for the best club teams in Caribbean Winter League Baseball. They stunned Venezuela 8-4 in the semi-finals to join Mexico in the championship game. They had edged out the Dominican Republic 5-4 in the semis.
