Croatian League Week 7: Surging Split Wins Two, Streak Reaches Five

News - Croatian Baseball Leagues Comments Off on Croatian League Week 7: Surging Split Wins Two, Streak Reaches Five

Two weekends at Starom Placu (the “Old Ground”) in Split appeared to be just what the Adriatic club needed, as it has suddenly turned a corner in the 2021 Croatian Baseball League season. This week, Zagreb hosted the Hope (“Nada”) and were trounced in two lop-sided victories. Elsewhere, Medvednica had the difficult task of travelling to top-of-the-table Karlovac, which continued its relentless barrage on offense in both games.

Nada Split at Zagreb (13-1, 16-1)
Split hit the road after two invigorating weekends at home, travelling to Zagreb. Hope gave the club from Croatia’s capital a thrashing, upending hapless Zagreb 13-1 and 16-1. The pair of victories moves Nada into second in the Croatian Baseball League, only four games behind Karlovac. Meanwhile, Zagreb has plummeted after a strong start, with seven defeats in-a-row.

Medvednica at Olimpija Karlovac (9-19, 4-16)
Medvednica was back in action after a fortnight’s layoff. Its last games had been against Karlovac in Week 4, when the league leaders thumped the Bears, 24-2 and 13-1. Set in this context, Olimpija’s lopsided results actually show quite a bit of improvement by Medvednica.

Karlovac, on the hand, continues to annihilate the competition in the Croatian Baseball League, with an average margin of victory of 15-5. Including five non-league games, the pacesetters are 17-2 and have outscored opponents 239-79 (in the 17 games with published scores). The 19 and 16 runs posted last weekend make for 10 double digit efforts in 12 known attempts.

Week 6 Late Results: Zagreb at Olimpija Karlovac
Although scores are unavailable, Zagreb was unable to earn a split with Karlovac as it had in the clubs’ first meeting as Olimpija swept the two-game set. The 11-9 victory for Zagreb in Week 2 was, in fact, the last time the capital-based squad entered the win column.
