Croatian League Week 4: Karin, Karlovac Break Out the Bats; Varaždin Sweeps

Posted on May 9, 2021May 12, 2021 by Gabriel Fidler

Karlovac continued its hold on first place in Croatia’s top circuit by shellacking Medvednica twice, with Damir Karin reaching base every time he came to the plate over the weekend. Meanwhile, Varaždin claimed its second win of the year on Saturday, falling short in a comeback attempt against visiting Split a day later. Zagreb had the week off.

Olimpija Karlovac at Medvednica (24-2, 13-1)
Karlovac won convincingly in Zagreb, achieving a season high in runs for any Croatian team in the opener. Medvednica managed to hang on for seven innings on Sunday after only five were played the day before, but still lost via mercy rule. The veteran Karin stood out with the bat for Olimpija, with a perfect 7-for-7 performance across the two games, driving in eight.

Nada SSM Split at Vindija Varaždin (4-7, 10-8)
Split was a guest at Varaždin, earning the “split” in a wild win on Sunday. Game One went to the hosts, with Nino Kruhek sending down 10 on strikes in 7.1 innings. Kruhek allowed six hits, three of which were by Andrija Jakšić, including two round-trippers. On Sunday, rain lengthened the game to four hours, with a tight 5-3 margin for Split tested by Vindija, ultimately falling short in its comeback attempt.

No box scores available from Week 4.
