Following the attack against Italian umpire Fabrizio Fabrizi following a Serie A1 Baseball matchup between Fortitudo Bologna and Castenaso, Castenaso’s captain Riccardo Bassi got suspended for three years from all baseball activities in Italy and a fine of 1,000 € was handed by the Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS). Bassi hit Fabrizi in the face when he returned the game balls to the home dugout after the game.
Both the club and the player already announced that they don’t appeal the decision and fully accept the verdict. Castenaso also publicly apologized for the attack. Bassi apparently realized the gravity of his mistake immediately and voluntarily stepped down as captain of the team and from the roster. He also will apologize in person to Fabrizi.
