Caribbean Series 2015: Teams from Mexico, Venezuela win on Day 1

Posted on February 3, 2015 by philipp

The 2015 Caribbean Series in San Juan, Puerto Rico started on Monday with the first round robin games. In the first match Mexico prevailed 2-1 over Cuba. Yulieski Gourriel got Cuba ahead, when he scored on a two-out single by Frederich Cepeda in the fourth. But runs by Rico Noel and Issmael Salas in the sixth and seventh turned the game around for Mexico. Starters Freddy Alvarez and Anthony Vasquez issued one run each in six respective five strong innings. Terance Marin picked up the win, Jonder Martinez took the loss.

In the second contest of the day host Puerto Rico lost 2-5 to Venezuela. Three runs in the third and two in the fourth decided the outcome early. Niuman Romero and Alexis Amarista combined for four RBI. Neftali Soto and Reymond Fuentes scored the two runs for Puerto Rico. Daryl Thompson allowed just one run on three hits for the win. Giovanni Soto got charged with the loss.
