The Canberra Cavalry stunned leader Adelaide Bite with a sweep in the seven-inning doubleheader on Friday. In game one in the afternoon a two-run double by Tom Vincent and a RBI single by German right fielder Donald Lutz plated the decisive three runs in the sixth of a 3-1 victory. The Bite only were able to counter with a bases loaded walk by Brendon Pett in the seventh. An even bigger rally decided game two.
The Cavalry scored all eleven runs of an 11-6 win in the fifth inning. Lutz was responsible for four of the eleven runs. He entered as pinch hitter, hit a pair of triples, scored once and drove in three. Adelaide tried to come back in the seventh, but even five runs weren’t enough to avoid the loss. Dutch shortstop Mariekson Gregorius played the full 14 innings for Canberra and went 0-for-6 with a walk and a run at the plate.
Two more games were played in the ABL on Friday. Chris Oxspring (W 3-0) won the pitcher’s duel against Adam Blackley (L 1-2) to lead the Sydney Blue Sox to a 3-1 win over the Melbourne Aces. Oxspring struck out seven batters in six solid innings, allowing five hits, a run and two walks. Blackley gave up four hits, three runs (1 ER) and three bb in five innings. Robbie Widlansky (Perth) and Josh Roberts (Brisbane) exchanged two-run homeruns in a 7-2 victory by the Perth Heat over the Brisbane Bandits. Daniel Schmidt (W 2-1) went seven innings for the win.
