Champaign, IL—Peter Caliendo’s 30 years of experience at coaching and playing baseball have secured his position worldwide as one of the foremost authorities on developing coaches and players at nearly every level of the game. Pulling from his vast experience, he now brings his expertise to Youth Baseball Drills(Human Kinetics, May 2014), a comprehensive resource to help baseball coaches teach the skills of the game to young players and ensure kids enjoy playing.
This collection of team-oriented drills covers all of the game’s essential skills including hitting, fielding, throwing, catching, and game execution. Each chapter is dedicated to one essential skill, so coaches will easily be able to locate drills they believe their players need the most. With drills varying in levels of difficulty, coaches are sure to find appropriate drills for their players, whether they are just getting started or have a few seasons of experience.
“I wrote Youth Baseball Drills to assist coaches with up-to-date skill development and drills that would allow them to run a fun and successful baseball practice,” Caliendo explains. “Making practices more fun and efficient helps coaches develop better players who will in turn want to stay in the game longer.”
Featuring more than 100 drills, Youth Baseball Drills emphasizes player involvement, teamwork, and fun. To further aid coaches, Caliendo includes ready-to-use 30-, 60-, and 90-minute practice plans for various practice environments. Coaches can use these plays as is or substitute certain drills in order to include their team’s favorites. With Youth Baseball Drills, coaches will be able to maximize on-field organization and time management and, most important, will be equipped to teach the game and help the kids have fun.
“This is no ordinary drills baseball book for coaches,” stresses Caliendo, who recently worked in Japan as a coach alongside Japanese baseball legend and all-time home run champion Sadaharu Ho. “It’s a state-of-the-art coaching philosophy, drills, and skill development book.”
In addition to serving as a coach for numerous successful professional teams, Caliendo serves as president of Caliendo Sports International, a global baseball organization specializing in the training of individuals, teams, and coaches, as well as dealing with professional baseball operations worldwide. He has extensively studied the techniques and tactics necessary for coaching youth baseball at multiple highly regarded baseball schools, including the legendary Mickey Owen Baseball School. He also served as the director of the Pan American Youth Baseball Association for six years, where he oversaw three gold-medal teams and more than 20 players who went on to play in Major League Baseball.
