In a game which went back and forth and saw six lead changes, Italy had the better end and improved to fifth in Pool G of the 2009 Baseball World Cup with the 7-6 victory over Netherlands Antilles on Monday in Vicenza. It was a make-up game of last week’s rainout. Both teams already were eliminated from the tournament before the start of the match.
A sac fly by Juan Carlos Infante in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Azzurri to the win. Mario Chiarini had tied the contest with a RBI double moments earlier. The Caribbeans led since the top of the eighth, when they had crossed the plate on a wild pitch and an error by the catcher. Ardley Jansen and Lorvin Louisa homered for the Antilles. Chiarini and Jairo Ramos combined for four Italian RBIs. Leonardo Zileri went three-for-three with a walk and a RBI.
Orsendo Clemencia (AHO) surrendered six hits, three runs and four bb in 4 1/3 innings. Matteo D’Angelo (ITA) gave up four hits, two runs and three walks in three innings. Yovany D’Amico (W 2-0) picked up his second win of the Baseball World Cup; Johannes Gregorius Sr. (L 0-3) took the loss.
