For the fourth time in the second round at the 2009 Baseball World Cup, extra innings had to decide over the outcome of a match. After both teams couldn’t bring a runner home in the tenth, Japan struck first one frame later, taking a 2-1 lead thanks to a Ryo Saeki RBI single. But it was not enough to win. Emerson Frostad singled to right, driving in Rene Tosoni and Brett Lawrie, as Japan’s catcher Saeki was charged with an error. The maple leafs won by a final score of 3-2. Atsui Tanaka (JPN) dominated with nine strikeouts in six strong innings, allowing one hit, one run and a walk. Matt Kniginyzky (CAN) gave up one unearned run on five hits and three bb in six innings.
