In another inner-European duel, the Netherlands shut out Great Britain 6-0 and improved to 5-0 in the second round of the Baseball World Cup. This also means that the Dutch team already has qualified for the third round, which will be held in Italy next week. However the two remaining games in this phase are still important, as wins and losses against the other three teams out of the top four will count for round three.
On Friday evening in Rotterdam the team of head coach Rod Delmonico took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo homerun by Raily Legito, a RBI triple by Hainley Statia and the following wild pitch. Eugene Kingsale, Sharlon Schoop and Danny Rombley extended the gap to six runs with RBI singles in the seventh and eighth.
Tom Stuifbergen allowed seven hits in seven scoreless innings to pick up the win. Arschwin Asjes and Leon Boyd closed out the shutout. Aeden McQueary-Ennis, who was pitching for ADO in the Dutch Hoofdklasse this year, gave up nine hits, five runs and three bb in seven-plus innings to take the loss.
