The Netherlands celebrated another victory at the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup on Friday evening. They crushed a helpless Venezuelan team 12-2 to improve to 6-1 in the second round, clinching first place and home field advantage against Cuba in the finals. Curt Smith set the highlight with a homerun in the third inning. He and Bryan Engelhardt (4-5) combined for six RBI. Kalian Sams scored three times. On the mound Arshwin Asjes went the distance, allowing seven hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck out five. Venezuela only was able to avoid the shutout on a two-run single by San Marino’s Willy Vasquez. On Saturday (5pm in Panama, midnight in Europe) the Dutch National Team will square off with Cuba in the championship game, trying to accomplish the unthinkable for European Baseball. The game will be shown live on TV in the Netherlands. Other European fans can go to www.ibaf.org and follow it live via stream (with subscription).
