The Dominican Republic shut out European champion Italy 7-0 at Chitre on Sunday evening. The Squadra Azzurri kept the score close until the Dominican team blew it wide open with a five-run rally in the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam of Victor Mendez. Angel Castro de Orbe struck out seven batters in six one-hit innings to pick up the win. Runelvys Hernandez and Dario Veras Abreu closed out the two-hitter. Francesco Imperiali got the lone two hits for Italy. Tiago Da Silva issued three hits, two runs (1 ER) and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, getting charged with the loss. Italy squares off with Australia on Monday afternoon in Santiago.
