350 people watched the Netherlands crush Taiwan 11-2 in their third-round opener in Messina on Tuesday. After already leading 4-1, a seven-run rally in the fifth blew things wide open for the squad of Rod Delmonico. The Dutch team improved to 3-1 and continues to march in the tournament. Taiwan is now 1-3 in round number three of the Baseball World Cup.
Veterans Randall Simon and Sharnol Adriana each collected three RBI. Sidney de Jong drove in two. Nine players scored for the lone remaining European participant in the BWC. Hung-Yu Lin hit his fourth homerun for Taiwan, accounting for one of the two runs by his team.
Alexander Smit issued only four hits, one run and two bb in six innings. He struck out six. Leon Boyd and Nick Veltkamp closed it out easily. Wen-Yang Liao took the loss, allowing five hits, four runs and five walks in four innings.
The Netherlands will face Australia on Wednesday. Taiwan has to take on the tough task Cuba.
