Baseball World Cup Standings 2nd Round after 5 Games (more or less)

Posted on September 19, 2009September 18, 2009 by philipp

Most of the second-round teams already have five of the seven games under their belts. Due to rainouts in Italy, Team USA, Australia, Italy and the Netherlands Antilles will have to make up two matches, probably on Monday.

Looking at the standings, only the Netherlands have mathematically clinched the third round so far, although Cuba, Puerto Rico, Taiwan (all three 4-1) and Team USA (4-0) also look good right now. Nonetheless each game in the second round is important, as the advancing teams will hold on to their wins and losses against the accompanying squads.

Standings Pool F in Netherlands:

  1. Netherlands 5-0
  2. Puerto Rico 4-1
  3. Cuba 4-1
  4. Venezuela 2-3
  5. South Korea 2-3
  6. Nicaragua 2-3
  7. Spain 1-4
  8. Great Britain 0-5

(Venezuela has beaten South Korea and Nicaragua, South Korea won against Nicaragua, Puerto Rico won against Cuba)

Standings Pool G in Italy:

  1. USA 4-0
  2. Taiwan 4-1
  3. Australia 3-1
  4. Canada 3-2
  5. Mexico 2-3
  6. Italy 1-3
  7. Japan 1-4
  8. Netherlands Antilles 0-4
