Press Release Swedish Baseball and Softball Federation
The 2009 Baseball World Cup not only brings the current Olympic champions South Korea to Sweden, but also brings a new baseball stadium to the host city Sundbyberg.
The Swedish Baseball and Softball Federation (SBSF) is now working together with the city of Sundbyberg in preparing the new stadium, built at the existing field at Örvallen, which will be ready for play in August of 2009.
The new baseball stadium will be part of a refurbished multi-sport complex including a FieldTurf soccer field, as well as a new track and field venue.
The field will have international dimensions and meets all safety standards according to international norms, including padded outfield walls, field lighting, and all necessary baseball specific equipment for tournaments.
The new stadium will also have a main grandstand with chair back seating for over 500 spectators, speaker and scorer facilities, concession stands, room for media and VIP facilities, as well as an indoor batting tunnel, storage space, and future clubhouse facilities for the local club Sundbyberg Heat.
“The facility will be a major upgrade compared to the fields used today in Sweden, and will be the future National Venue for Swedish Baseball,” says SBSF President Mats Fransson, and continues, “We also hope it serves as a model for other fields in terms of facility standards and management, and that we can raise the overall level for field standards in Sweden through this project.”
For the purpose of hosting the World Cup event in Sundbyberg, the seating capacity will be increased to 2.500 spectators with temporary seats, and the event area will also feature an Activity Town in which the spectators can try their skills in some aspects of baseball.
“We aim to have a broad impact, primarily on the youth, by continuing to implement several new school programs in Sweden, specifically in Sundbyberg and the greater Stockholm area, which hopefully will lead to more youth getting involved in our sports,” says Mats Fransson.
