The Arizona Fall League ended on Saturday with the championship game between the Mesa Solar Sox and the Surprise Saguaros. Surprise won thanks to a 2-0 shutout behind strong pitching of starter Eduardo Rodriguez and five relievers. Dutch infielder Jonathan Schoop scored one of the two runs, going 1-for-3. Mesa’s Kris Bryant got named Arizona Fall League MVP afterwards. The Chicago Cubs prospect batted .364/.457/.727 with six home runs and 17 RBI in 20 games. Earlier this he already won the annual Golden Spikes Award for the best amateur baseball player in the United States.
- Schoop (Baltimore Orioles) finished the year batting .177/.271/.323 with three home runs, 11 runs and six RBI in 16 games.
- German outfielder/first baseman Max Kepler (Minnesota Twins) was mainly used at first base and batted .234/.306/.313 with five doubles, eight runs and four RBI in 18 games for the Glendale Desert Dogs.
- Germany’s outfielder Aaron Altherr (Philadelphia Phillies) played for the Peoria Javelinas and went .200/.265/.267 with six runs and three RBI in 12 games.
- South Africa’s infielder Gift Ngoepe (Pittsburgh Pirates) took the field for the Scottsdale Scorpions. He batted .078/.172/.098 with five runs and four RBI in 17 games.
- Great Britain’s left-hander Michael Roth (Los Angeles Angels) pitched for the Mesa Solar Sox. He went 1-0 with an ERA of 3.43 in six starts. He struck out ten and walked ten in 21 innings.
- Czech Republic’s left-hander Alex Sogard (Houston Astros) was mainly used as a reliever for the Peoria Javelinas. He was 2-1 with an ERA of 3.65 in ten games (1 start), although four-run (3 ER) outing in his last appearance screwed up his stats. He struck out ten and walked eight in 12 1/3 innings.
