CD Pamplona has signed a bunch of pitching prospects. The most important is from Venezuela. Alexis FUMERO is 23 years and appeared in three games for U.C.V. of the Liga Nacional Bolivariana. He had an ERA of 1.93, while striking out twelve in 14 innings pitched.
The right-hander will strengthen a bullpen together with veteran Alberto CASANELLAS (40 years old) and southpaw Patrice BIRONES. Pamplona also signed the 45-year-old Carlos LEON. He played 20 years for CD Amaya and appeared at the Olympics 1992 in Barcelona. He and Felix CANO are considered as the best players in Spanish baseball history.
Besides these acquisitions, CD also added three young talents. Eneko DEL BURGO (20), Daniel CELAYA (20) and Aritz LEIVA (19) are coming over from CD Irabia and CD Arga. All three only saw limited playing action for their squads last year.
However they will miss a lefty on their pitching staff this season. Txetxo SAN MARTIN (ERA 3.75) can’t throw due to an arm injury and moves to first base.
2007 was a disappointing year for Pamplona as they finished in eleventh of twelve teams. After a bye in week one, they will open the season against the FC Barcelona on April 6th.
