The ALB ORKAS had a successful start into their premiere season in the Venezuelan winter league Liga Paralela. They shut out the BRAVOS 8-0 on Wednesday. The Dutch starter Jurjen Van Zijl gave up five hits in three scoreless innings to lead a staff, which combined for a nine-hitter. Carlos Farias (W 1-0) replaced Van Zijl and picked up the win after four innings of two-hit ball. Steven Van Groningen of ALCMARIA followed Farias and pitched a perfect inning. Yulman Ribeiro, who was a starter for the Spanish CB VILADECANS in 2008, closed it out, conceding two hits in a scoreless ninth.

The offense supported its pitching, beginning in the second and blew the score wide open, when they put five runs on the board in the fifth. Catcher David Diaz went two for two with a homerun and two RBI. David Ochoa, who had three hits, also drove in two. Jose Aponte scored three times. Besides Van Zijl and his fellow hurlers, two more players from European Baseball made appearances in the game. Visbsen Sytse from the ALMERE MAGPIES split catching duties with Diaz. Ricky Thomas from the Belgian BRASSCHAAT BRAVES was the DH.

On Thursday, the ALB ORKAS face the HOUSTON ASTROS affiliate. CD PAMPLONA’s Alexis Fumero is getting the start.
