Here’s a quick look at the South African natives in minor league baseball.
Tayler Scott, Baltimore Orioles.
Current team: Norfolk Tides (Triple-A)
Since our last update, when Taylor Scott became the first African-born pitcher in MLB history, he’s been designated for assignment and claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. Scott is now pitching with Triple-A Norfolk. He had 5 appearances with the Mariners, throwing 7.2 big league innings with 8 runs, 7 walks, and 6 strikeouts. He’s thrown 3 innings thus far with the Orioles top farm club, striking out 5 and allowing only one baserunner.
Gift Ngoepe, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: Altoona Curve (Double-A)
Ngoepe signed with the Phillies this offseason, but was released from his contract after two months at Triple-A. Gift rejoined the Pirates organization, where he originally signed and developed, and he is currently playing at Double-A Altoona. In 45 minor league games this year, he’s slashing .220/.299/.394.
Kieran Lovegrove, Baltimore Orioles.
Current team: Frederick Keys (High-A)
At last check, Lovegrove had just been released by the Giants. Since then, he’s agreed to join the Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Jo’burg native has yet to make an appearance with his new team.
Victor Ngoepe, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: West Virginia Black Bears (Short-season A)
Ngoepe has played 6 games thus far at shortstop, hitting two doubles and walking twice against 3 strikeouts for a .368/.435/.474 slash line.
