Africans in the Minors through May 4, 2018

by DZ

Here’s a quick look at the South African natives currently playing minor league baseball.

Gift Ngoepe, Toronto Blue Jays
Current team: Buffalo Bisons (Triple-A)
Ngoepe has had a hectic transaction period since we last checked in 3 weeks ago. Gift opened the season on the big league roster with Toronto. They sent him down to Triple-A April 20th, and recalled him to the big league team on April 30th. Then Thursday, they sent him down again, and cleared him from the 40-man roster. To date, the infielder has played in 13 major league games and 7 games in Buffalo. Across both levels, he’s got 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 24 times in 43 at bats.

Tayler Scott, Texas Rangers.
Current team: Round Rock Express (Triple-A)
Scott has pitched 11.2 innings in 9 appearances for Round Rock. He is 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA. He’s walked 8 and struck out 12.

Dylan Unsworth, Los Angeles Angels.
Current team: Salt Lake Bees (Triple-A)
Unsworth opened the 2018 season with his new parent club (he’d been a Mariner for his career up until then) in Double-A, and after two starts he was promoted to their Triple-A team in Salt Lake. In 5 starts and 21 innings across both levels, he is 2-2 with a 5.57 ERA with 25 hits, 5 walks, and 17 strikeouts.

Anthony Phillips, Colorado Rockies.
Current team: Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A)
Philipps has hit .300 through 9 games at the Triple-A level in the Rockies organization, but earlier this week he was transferred (in a paper move) to their rookie level team. We’ll watch and see what that means for Phillips, as that team won’t play official games for another 6 weeks, and the 28-year-old Phillips wouldn’t fit at that level for long.

Kieran Lovegrove. Cleveland Indians.
Current team: Lynchburg Hillcats (High-A)
Lovegrove has pitched in 9 games for 14.1 innings. He has a 2-0 record and 1.88 ERA while allowing 10 hits and 4 walks while striking out twenty. He was selected in the third round of the 2012 draft after moving to the United States for high school.

Now in Extended Spring Training in Florida until the rookie league seasons begin in June:

Vince Deyzel, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: GCL Pirates (rookie)

Victor Ngoepe, Pittsburgh Pirates.
Current team: GCL Pirates (rookie)
