Spanish National Team Catcher Dewis Navarro follows Leal to Nettuno

Posted on December 6, 2008December 6, 2008 by philipp

The catcher of the Spanish National Team and of the Spanish champion MARLINS PUERTO CRUZ, Dewis Navarro follows national teammate Remigio Leal to the Italian vice champion DANESI NETTUNO. He celebrated his 30th birthday this summer and is considered as one of the best players in Spanish baseball at the moment. Dewis was born in Caracas, Venezuela and is the older brother of Dioner Navarro, starting catcher for the reigning American League champion TAMPA BAY RAYS.

Navarro is playing in Spain since 2004, when he was with Rojos de Candelaria. Since 2007 he is a member of the MARLINS and won the Spanish title in the past two years. During the 2008 season he batted .339 (OBP .417/SLG .446) with one homerun, ten doubles, 25 runs scored and 25 RBIs. At the European Cup in Grosseto, he hit .263 (.238/.263). In 2007 he helped the National team taking third place at the European Championships in Barcelona and was the best Spanish player (.429/.455/.619) at the Baseball World Cup in Taiwan. He also played for Spain in the Olympic Qualifier last March.

After changing manager at the beginning of the offseason, NETTUNO also started to revamp the roster for the 2009 season in the past weeks. They already brought back catcher Manuel Gasparri from BOLOGNA and signed Leal of the FC BARCELONA to strengthen the pitching staff. Despite the arrival of Gasparri, Navarro should pick up enough playing time for DANESI, as he has played every position except third base, center and left field in the past.
