Remigio Leal leaves FC Barcelona to join Danesi Nettuno

The Italian Baseball League continues to fish in the European Baseball waters. Right-handed pitcher Remigio Leal apparently is leaving the FC BARCELONA and joins DANESI NETTUNO. He was born on October 1st, 1963 in Pinar del Rio, Cuba and played nine years in the Cuban Leagues, posting a 53-48 record and an ERA of 4.16 in 178 games.

In 1999 Leal came to Europe, joining CB VILADECANS in the Spanish Division de Honor. After pitching for other Spanish teams in the following years, he signed with the FC BARCELONA in 2006. In 2007 he made his first appearance for the Spanish National Team at the European Championships, taking third place in the tournament. He also pitched for Spain at the 2007 Baseball World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Qualifier.

In 2008 Leal had a 6-2 record with an ERA of 1.80 in 15 games (eight starts) for the Spanish vice champion. He struck out 66 (22 walks) in 85 innings. At the European Cup in Regensburg, he helped winning the tournament with a ERA of 3.38 in 13 1/3 innings over the course of three games. He struck out 19, while walking just one batter. In the European Cup Final Four in September he started the bronze medal game against MONTEPASCHI GROSSETO (ITA), giving up two runs in six innings.

This week NETTUNO’s league rival RIMINI already acquired two Spanish national team hurlers with Jorge Balboa and Fernando Gutierrez. Balboa was a teammate of Leal in Barcelona.
