Day 1 of the Under-23 European Baseball Championship in the Czech Republic produced one thriller and two statement victories, while another game was postponed until tomorrow.

In the opener, Great Britain shut out Israel, 7-0, with three pitchers combining for 10 strikeouts in a five-hit whitewash. Charlie Collins had a triple and a single, while Jackson Kraemer had a pair of one-base knocks. Both drove in two. Israel is the lone change from the 2023 Under-23 European Baseball Championship, replacing Belgium.

The Netherlands set down Austria, 10-3, with Tijn Fredrikze punching out seven in five strong innings. Gedionne Marlin was a sparkplug atop the order, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a single, swiping a base as well.

The final game completed was a thriller, with Italy taking a 2-1 advantage in the second before Germany drew things even in the fifth. The Azzurri then went ahead in the seventh, but Tristan Russell led off the bottom of the final inning with a double, scoring on an error. Darrion Richards then walked off the Germans with a double, securing a 4-3 victory. The Cardinals’ Ettore Giulianelli [link to monthly update] started the game for Italy by posting eight Ks in five innings, with only two hits allowed.

In the Czech Republic – France game, Les Bleus wers leading 5-4 before the game postponed due to wet weather. The game will resume on Day 2 from the top of the fourth inning.
