With four days of the 2022 Tenerife Cup in the books, the French national team remains undefeated at the pre-season event after a second tie in as many games against the Czech national team yesterday in Puerto Cruz.
The two national teams are the guests of the Tenerife Marlins, the 2021 Spanish Baseball League (SBL) champions, with the national squads facing each other in a three-game series and the Marlins taking on both national teams at the beginning and end of the week-long competition.
France and the host Marlins opened play on Sunday, Mar 13, with the French taking Game 1 (5-3) and repeating the success in Monday’s Game 2 (9-5).
The three-game series between the national teams began on Tuesday, with the squads combining for 20 runs and 19 hits in a 10-10 stalemate (box score). Twelve of the runs came in the final frame, with a three-run homer by former Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets farmhand Martin Cervenka tying up the scores in the bottom of the seventh, and final, inning.
The two teams met again yesterday and parted ways with the scores even at four (box score) after heavy rain interrupted play in the fifth inning.
The Czech and French national teams are preparing to compete in September’s World Baseball Classic qualifiers, while the Marlins will begin to defend their Spanish championship when the SBL starts play on Mar 26.
