Starting pitcher Matteo D’ANGELO has joined the squad of the Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was voted as the rookie of the year and the best Italian starter last season after an impressive year as a starter for Fortitudo Bologna. He went 7-2 with an ERA of 1.94, striking out 62 (29 walks) in 74.1 innings pitched.
The 19-year-old right-hander also was a member of the National Team at the Baseball World Cup (3.1 IP, ERA 5.40) in Taiwan and the European Championships (6.2 IP, ERA 1.35) in Barcelona.
The Eagles are playing in the Big South Conference. They had a 33-7 record in 2007 and missed the playoffs. They will start their new season with the Johnny Gill Memorial, which begins on February 22.
