The Canadian team got off to a good start into the Olympics, beating China 10-0 in eight innings. The game started with three scoreless innings before Scott Thorman broke up the tie with a three-run homerun in the fourth. They continued to build up the gap in the reminder of the match and won through ten-run rule in the eighth. Mike Saunders also homered. Adam Stern drove in two and scored twice.
Chris Begg (W 1-0) struck out nine in 6 2/3 solid innings, allowing just six hits. Tim Burton and Rheal Cormier closed it out with four more strikeouts. Tao Bu (L 0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss.
