News - German Baseball Leagues Comments Off on Recaps: Mannheim, Heidenheim edge out Regensburg, Solingen for German Finals

Ray Stokes helped to push Heidenheim into Finals

The MANNHEIM TORNADOS and the HEIDENHEIM HEIDEKOEPFE each won their semi-final series in five games against the BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE REGENSBURG, respective the SOLINGEN ALLIGATORS and will play in the German finals, starting on August 22.

(2-3) Solingen Alligators – Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 14-4 (7), 1-19 (7), 2-10

In game three the ALLIGATORS used a 13-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to beat the HEIDEKOEPFE 14-4 due to ten-run rule. The guests had broken a 1-1 tie in the top of the frame with a bases clearing triple by Ray Stokes. Matt Pali went four-for-five with two runs scored and six RBI. Chris Beck had also four hits and scored three times for SOLINGEN. Enorbel Marquez-Ramirez received the win, Markus Winkler the loss.

With a 2-1 lead, the ALLIGATORS chose to rest Jens Cornelsen for a potential game five and used a combination of Pali, Robin Drache, Moritz Buttgereit, Sebastian Bernards and Dustin Hughes as pitchers in game four. The HEIDENHEIM offense said thanks and scored 19 runs on 19 hits in seven innings in a 19-1 rout. They blew the game wide open with an eight-run fifth. Andreas Janzen and Ryan Lilly combined for seven hits, six runs and six RBI. Dusty Bergman gave up just one run on three hits and four bb in seven innings for the win. Pali took the loss.

On Sunday the decisive fifth match was scheduled and the HEIDEKOEPFE didn’t needed much time to decide the outcome. They scored seven runs in the first two innings on their way to a 10-2 victory and the finals. Ray Stokes (4-4, BB) and Ryan Lilly (3-6, 2 RBI) scored three runs apiece. Robert Gruber drove in three. Peter Dankerl, who was hit hard in a relief appearance in game three on Saturday, did a much better job one day later. He issued just two Beck-runs (one on a solo homerun) on nine hits and two bb in a complete game win. Cornelsen surrendered seven hits and seven runs (3 ER) in just 1 2/3 innings.

(2-3) Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg – Mannheim Tornados 4-6, 10-3, 7-11

The TORNADOS stunned REGENSBURG in game three with a 6-4 win to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Marvin Appiah’s two-run homerun in the third capped a three-run rally, which put MANNHEIM ahead. They added two more runs in the seventh, before the LEGIONAERE offense tried to come back, cutting the deficit to 4-5. But another run for the guests in the ninth sealed the win. Martin Dewald got win number five in the postseason  with a complete game performance. Michael Weigl had three hits and three RBI for REGENSBURG. Philipp Hoffschild took the loss.

Game four was played on Sunday and the BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE evened the series with an easy 10-3 victory. They scored four runs in second and blew the game open through six runs between the fifth and seventh. Alex Lauterbach homered and drove in a total of four. Matthew Vance helped with three hits and three RBI out of the leadoff spot. Sascha Lutz hit a solo homerun for MANNHEIM. Eddie Aucoin pitched eight solid innings for the win. Mike Otto took the loss.

The fifth and all-deciding match was played right after the fourth and the TORNADOS had a perfect start, plating eight runs in the opening frame en route to an 11-7 win. REGENSBURG was able to cut the deficit in a half in the second and also threatened to turn the score into their favor in the seventh, but MANNHEIM answered the first rally with two runs and the second by sending Craig Pycock on the mound to shut things down. Lutz scored four times. Chris Falls, Billy Hess and Pycock combined for six RBI. Philipp Howard and Weigl each drove in two for the BUCHBINDER LEGIONAERE. Rene Franke picked up the win after six-plus rocky innings. Benedikt Antwi faced only two batters to take the loss.
