During the season opening press conference of the Italian Baseball League club DANESI NETTUNO on Thursday, the mayor of the city Alessio Chiavetta said that he believes that the Baseball World Cup final next September will take place in Nettuno. “No political decision will remove the final”. This bold statement was not an official announcement, but the signs show in this direction.
Original plans for the Baseball World Cup hosted by seven European countries talked about playing the final in Rome, which last also was backed up in a meeting of the organizers in February. However there are only about six months left until the final is being played and there is still no sufficient facility confirmed for the Italian capital. Nettuno is located about 80 kilometers south of Rome.
The 38th IBAF Baseball World Cup will be played from September 9th to 27th 2009 in Europe with 22 teams. Prague, Ostrava (Czech Republic), Barcelona (Spain), Sundbyberg (Sweden), Moscow (Russia) and Regensburg (Germany) will host five preliminary round groups in the first phase. The second round takes place in the Netherlands and Italy, followed by the final phase exclusively in Italy. Regensburg is the only venue, which already has started with the ticket sale. Tickets for Sundbyberg, Sweden will be available in April.
