19-year-old left-handed outfielder Maik Ehmcke has signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He is the third German player to get signed by a Major League organization this summer after Julsan Kamara (Philadelphia Phillies) and Sven Schueller (Los Angeles Dodgers).
Ehmcke is coming from the Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg, where he is playing since his transfer from the Dohren Wild Farmers in 2010. A good performance at the recent MLB European Academy in Regensburg helped him to get the offer from the Diamondbacks. In June he made his debut for the German national team during the Prague Baseball Week.
The outfielder, who also is able to play at first, will join the Diamondbacks for Spring Training in February 2014. Ehmcke spent a semester at a college in the United States last year, but returned quickly to Regensburg.
