CARDINALS MAKE SWISS CUP FINAL ONLY TO LOSE TO THE LAUSANNE INDIANS
The Bern Cardinals, playing in their third final of the Swiss Cup in the last four years, lost to the Lausanne Indians 4-1 on Sunday in Embrach. The three-time defending champions of the NLA, once again finished the Cup in disappointment, having won only one Cup in the last three finals appearances. On Saturday, the Cardinals defeated the Zurich Barracudas by a score of 9-5, behind solid pitching form Chris Beyeler. Chris threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing only four hits, and no earned runs. The offense for the Cards was led by Samuel Paulino’s two doubles, and a three hit day from Johnny Perigos. In the other semi-final, the Lausanne Indians survived a tough game by defeating the Wil Devils 11-9.
On Sunday, in only the second televised game in Swiss baseball history, the Bern Cardinals struggled to score against Indian pitching, stranding 16 base runners in the game. The lone run came on a solo homerun from Perigos in the third. Severin Fries was the tough luck loser in a game that featured five errors from the Cards defense. Fries struck out twelve Indians, while allowing a single earned run over eight innings pitched. The Cardinals, now losers of three of their last five games played, look to turn things around the weekend against the Zurich Barracudas in a battle of playoff teams. The games will be played in Bern, at the Allmend, starting at 11am, and 2pm.
The game between the Cardinals and Indians will be televised on Star TV on Wednesday, August 27 beginning at 9:30 pm.
